How does a water softener work?

WORKING PROCEDURE OF SALT BASED WATER SOFTENER

The first kind is the salt based water softener. What it does is it replaces the calcium and magnesium ions in the water that makes the limescale with sodium. It consists of an ion exchange chamber where the water supply is fed. A concentrated brine solution is added to the water in the ion exchange chamber which introduces sodium ion in extremely high concentration so that it can replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water. This process pulls out all the undesirable ions and drains them out a small amount of water whereas your actual supply of water is free from lime scale and water hardening agents. When the brine solution’s concentration isn’t high enough to soften the water, the salt needs to be replaced which is one drawback of this system.

WORKING PROCEDURE OF SALT-FREE WATER SOFTENER

The second kind is the salt-free water softener. This has a variety of systems and it doesn’t use any salts. The cheapest is the electric system. It uses electricity to produce a strong electromagnetic field which is directed at the water in the pipe where the device is attached. The device needs to be placed on a pipeline where all the water runs through, so it affects the entire water supply. The electromagnetic field affects the structure of the ions causing lime scale and keeps them in a suspension.

This suspension doesn’t settle in the pipes, so no limescale is formed. Moreover, the electromagnetic field breaks off all bicarbonates into carbonates, and this produces carbon dioxide that remains in solution. The excess carbon dioxide in water attacks is existing lime scale and dissolves them into a suspension. This produces water that is safe to use and drink and no waste products.

It uses electricity and nothing else, so no maintenance is required. The other type of salt-free water softener is the cartridge system. The cartridge system uses chemicals in cartridges which help soften the water. One example of such system is the chelating process of water softening. The chemical in the cartridges is chelating agents. These are specific negatively charged ions called ligands which in water take a complex form.

The ligands in the presence of water don’t use directly bond with the positively charged ions to form an ionic bond instead couple with the water and form a structure around the opposing ions not allowing them to attach themselves to any other surface. This stops the magnesium and calcium ions from forming their carbonates and settling into the pipes. In fact, it also works on the iron ions and neutralizes their effects too.
